Clear Width
  • Doorways shall provide a clear opening of 32° minimum, with the door open 90°.
  • Clear opening shall be measured between the face of the door and stop.
  • Openings more than 24" in depth shall provide a clear opening of 36" minimum.
  • Exception: Doors not requiring full user passage, such as shallow closets, shall have a clear opening of 20" minimum
4.138 Door Hardware Handles, pulls, latches, locks, and other operating devices shall have shape that's easy to grasp with one hand and does not require tight grasping, tight pinching, or twisting of the wrist to operate. Lever operated mechanisms, push type mechanisms, and u-shaped handles are acceptable designs. When sliding doors are fully open, operating hardware shall be exposed and usable from the both sides. Hardware required for passage shall be mounted no higher than 48" above finished floor.

Grab bars ADA-ABA guidelines

    • A vertical side wall grab bar that is a minimum of 18" long is also required in water closets.
    • Grab bars must be 42" minimum on the sidewall and 36" minimum on the back wall.
    • The rear grab bar in a water closet which was required to be a minimum on 36" long can now be 24" long where wall space does not permit a 36" grab bar.
    • In bath tubs, two grab bars shall be installed on the back wall. Each shall be installed 15 inches maximum from the head end wall and 12 inches maximum from the control end wall. A grab bar 24" long minimum shall be installed on the control end wall at the front edge of the bathtub.
    • Where a seat is provided in standard roll-in type shower compartments, grab bars shall be provided on the back wall and the side wall opposite the seat. Grab bars shall not be above the seat. When seats are not provided, grab bars should be located on all three walls and shall be installed 6 inches maximum from adjacent walls.
